The statue of Godfrey of Bouillon standing in front of the walls of the Bouillon Castle was created by the Belgian artist Victor Demanet in 1938. Godfrey of Bouillon (1060-1100) was a medieval Frankish knight who was one of the leaders of the First Crusade from 1096 until his death. He was the lord of the Belgian town Bouillion and sold the castle of the town to the Bishop of Liège in order to finance the crusade. Godfrey became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and denied the title king as he believed that the true king of Jerusalem was Jesus.
